Excerpt from Finance & Commerce article by Frank Jossi:
Owned by the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, the Glendale Townhomes in Prospect Park have not had many updates to improve their energy efficiency since they were constructed in 1952. Later this year a pilot project will begin with an energy audit of one of the complex’s eight-unit townhouse buildings. After that, a larger weatherization program will get underway to make the lives of all tenants more comfortable, said Tim Gaetz, the authorities managing director of facilities and development.
“The weatherization will make the townhouses less drafty and warmer in winter and cooler in summer,” Gaetz said. “They will have a much more comfortable indoor living environment. And any money savings for [the housing authority] means more funds are available for other things.”
“Multiple stakeholders partnering to improve the energy efficiency of the Glendale Townhomes is a perfect example of the new way public and private entities must collaborate, to both address climate change and improve people’s everyday lives,” shared Luke Hollenkamp, Sustainability Program Coordinator with the City of Minneapolis Office of Sustainability.
“We at the City of Minneapolis are very excited to continue our important work with Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy through the Minneapolis Clean Energy Partnership to encourage and facilitate more of these comprehensive energy efficiency projects. In the coming years, we look forward to translating lessons learned from our Partnership’s pilot with the Neighborhood Hub and the Minneapolis Renters Coalition into standard, effective outreach practice to our disadvantaged communities.”
